Fall of Adam and Eve

Fall of Adam and Eve. Adam’s transgression (not “sin”) that took place in the Garden of Eden, causing them to become mortal and making them subject to physical death. This event has even been called “a blessing in disguise” because, without it, spirits would never have been allowed to enter the Second Estate from Preexistence. According to the Book of Mormon, “Adam fell that men might be” (2 Nephi 2:25). According to Apostle Mark E. Petersen, “The fall of Adam and Eve was no tragedy. It was a blessing in disguise, for without it none of us would have been born, since Adam and Eve, in their original state, were not able to have children, as the Book of Mormon explains” (Adam: Who Is He? p. 4). Tenth President Joseph Fielding Smith said, “The ‘fall’ of Adam and Eve was not a sin but an essential act upon which mortality depends” (Answers to Gospel Questions 5:15). In Christianity, the fall of Adam was the result of sin against God’s command to not eat the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. Adam’s disobedience caused death to enter the world.”Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12).
