Does God want people in hell?

By Eric Johnson

While Jesus did say the road to hell is broad but the path to life is narrow (Matthew 7:13-14), God takes no delight in having people spend eternity in hell. Some may argue that it is unfair for people to go to hell, but according to Romans 3:23 and 6:23, eternal death for sin (which taints all human beings) is entirely deserved. If we turn this argument on its head, what’s really unfair is that people could ever be invited to heaven, as fairness should require that all people are eternally separated from God.

Fortunately, as John 3:16 puts it, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” The offer of eternal life has been made; each individual must consider what he or she will do with this offer of grace. The Bible says that what is required is confession of the name of Jesus (the biblical Jesus and not the version supplied by Mormonism) in order to receive the free gift of salvation (Acts 16:31; Romans 10:9-10). The question is, what will you do with this unconditional offer?
