How much trust should be put into a religious experience?

By Eric Johnson

While having a personal experience with God is important, it may sometimes seem that followers of other religions have stronger testimonies than ours. For example, many Mormons talk about a “burning in the bosom” and yet their experiential beliefs contradict the teachings of the Bible. We should be careful not to trust in our fleeting feelings or give in to the temptation of comparing our story with others (Prov. 14:12, 28:26). Instead, we need to focus our eyes on the genuine Jesus (John 14:6, 2 Cor. 11:4) and seek God’s kingdom first (Matt. 6:33). Because God desires authentic worship and wants us to avoid error, we have been commanded to obey His Word while not seeking after an experience that is contrary to the truth (John 4:24; Gal. 1:8-9).
